Is it true that sometimes it is from the Sunnah to abandon the Sunnah?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If by abandoning the Sunnah one intends abandoning the Prophet’s way and guidance, then it is serious, based on His (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not of me." However, if one intends abandoning what is other than the obligatory, then it is permissible to abandon it and may even be preferable in some cases, such as for someone who fears missing a greater legitimate benefit or incurring a greater harm. But habitually abandoning the Sunnah and supererogatory acts discredits one’s testimony due to the negligence towards religion shown by the one who abandons them.
