What is the ruling on the prayer of the Imam and the congregants if the Imam makes a mistake in reciting the Surah, and the congregants correct him, whereupon he says aloud, "Please"?
It is legislated for the congregant to alert the Imam when he makes a mistake in recitation. The alert must come from those who have memorized [the Quran] to avoid confusing the Imam. Deliberate speech during prayer invalidates it if it is not for the benefit of the prayer and if the speaker knows of its prohibition, by consensus. However, speech for the benefit of the prayer does not invalidate it, nor does speech out of forgetfulness or ignorance, based on the Hadith of Mu'awiyah ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami. The prayer of the congregants is valid in all circumstances, due to the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "They pray for you. If they are correct, then it is for you and for them. And if they err, then it is for you and against them."
