Will a child under five years old be questioned after death?

Scholars have differed regarding the questioning of children in the grave. One group believes they will be questioned, citing the Prophet's (peace be upon him) supplication for a child, asking for protection from the torment and trial of the grave. They argue that Allah will perfect their intellects so they may know their station and be inspired with the answer. They link this to their examination in the Hereafter.

The other group believes they will not be questioned because questioning is specific to those who are accountable and have understood the Messenger. A child lacks discernment and will not be questioned about what he was unable to know. They responded to the hadith of Abu Hurairah by explaining that the torment of the grave for a child is not a punishment for a sin, but rather a pain that afflicts the deceased. Torment is broader than punishment, like the pain of travel, and this does not contradict the principle of "no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another."
