A father is not permitted to prevent his son from attending congregational prayer (Salat al-Jama'ah) due to its obligatory nature. The father's command to abandon it is not binding unless there is a legitimate, weighty Sharia reason, based on the Prophet's (PBUH) saying: "Obedience is only in what is good and right," and his saying: "Listening and obeying are incumbent upon a Muslim individual in what he likes and dislikes, as long as he is not commanded to commit a sin. If he is commanded to commit a sin, then there is no listening and no obeying," and his saying: "There is no obedience to a created being in disobedience to the Creator." You must honor your father in all matters except when he commands you to commit a sin.
