Seeking مدد (help/aid) from the dead is a supplication to other than Allah, and it is (polytheism). If the one who says it does not intend seeking aid or assistance, then what do they intend? And whoever says that while being ignorant of its meaning or ruling is excused for their ignorance until proof is established against them. We advise against preoccupation with the issue of تكفير (declaring someone an apostate), lest it open the doors to obsessive doubts.
