Is training dogs for guarding and security purposes, as well as for show and for taking pictures and videos, permissible?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The Shari'ah permits keeping a dog for guarding and hunting, and the hadiths indicate the permissibility of this. Imam An-Nawawi permitted keeping a dog for guarding houses by analogy with the three aforementioned cases. It is permissible to train a dog within the limits of the stated permission, i.e., for hunting or guarding, and there is no sin in taking a wage for that. As for training dogs that are not kept for hunting or guarding, it is not permissible, because it is assisting in their acquisition, which is forbidden.
