What is the ruling on not helping a poor family whose patriarch is a smoker, over fifty years old, and cannot find work because of his smoking?

Smoking is forbidden by the consensus of contemporary scholars, and the smoker is advised to repent. The presence of a smoker in the family does not prohibit assisting them or giving charity to them, especially if they are in need. The sin of the father spending money on smoking falls upon him, and the one who gives charity will receive their reward. It is commendable to give charity specifically to the righteous and good people, but giving charity to a wicked person or a disbeliever is permissible and generally earns a reward.
