Calling upon the dead with the intention of seeking aid (istighathah), requesting benefit, or averting harm is polytheism (). However, if it is done with the intention of seeking intercession (tawassul), it is an innovation (bid‘ah). As for calling upon them for lamentation (nudbah) by mentioning their virtues and what has occurred due to their loss, it is permissible if it is done truthfully and rightfully.
