Is expiation obligatory for every time I broke my vow, or is one expiation sufficient?

If the forbidden series, which the questioner vowed to abandon, is what is meant, then the majority of scholars hold that a vow to abandon something forbidden is not valid because it is already a religious obligation. However, the Hanbalis and Ibn Taymiyyah believe in its validity and the necessity of expiation upon breaking it, and this is the more cautious and blameless approach. If the vow is valid and expiation is due upon breaking it, the expiation does not repeat with repeated breaches unless the wording of the vow or the intention of the one vowing indicates otherwise. It must be noted that abandoning forbidden acts does not require a vow, as abandoning them is obligatory and the one who commits them is sinful.
