Is it permissible to cut ties with relatives due to the inability to communicate and the unavailability of transportation, and the husband's prohibition from going out except for necessities, and to sever the relationship with a sister who causes problems, backbites, and makes false accusations?
Kinship ties are obligatory and specific to maharim (unmarriageable relatives), and it is forbidden to sever them. As for non- relatives, maintaining ties with them is recommended. Maintaining kinship ties is not limited to visitation but is achieved through anything customarily considered a connection, such as financial assistance, fulfilling needs, correspondence, and communication. It is not permissible to sever ties with mahram relatives due to an inability to visit, nor is it permissible to sever ties with an abusive sister; rather, ties should be maintained in a way that avoids her harm. Maintaining kinship ties brings blessings and great reward.
