What is the difference between a martyr of this world, a martyr of the hereafter, and a martyr of this world and the hereafter?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The martyr of this world and the hereafter is he who is killed in jihad for the sake of Allah, advancing and not retreating, not for any worldly gain, such that his fighting is to make the word of Allah supreme.

As for the martyr of this world, he is one who is killed in jihad but his fighting was for show or for some worldly purpose. In this world, he is treated as a martyr, so he is not washed and no funeral prayer is offered for him, and in the hereafter, what he deserves of punishment awaits him.

As for the martyr of the hereafter, he is one who will be given the reward of a martyr on the Day of Resurrection, but he is not treated like one in this world; rather, he is washed and prayed over. Among them are those unjustly killed without fighting, those who die from an abdominal illness, from plague, or from drowning, and those killed defending their property.
