What is the ruling on keeping cats as pets in the house, taking into consideration general hygiene and health?

It is permissible, according to Islamic law, to keep cats, feed them, and not torture them, unless they are sick or there is a fear of them transmitting diseases, in which case they must be abandoned. The eating or drinking of cats does not render food or water impure, because cats are not impure; they are among those who frequently circulate among us. However, there should not be excessive care for cats or extravagant spending on them while needy people exist. Furthermore, selling cats is forbidden by Islamic law.
