Is a man permitted to divorce his wife if she has taken birth control for one year without his knowledge and is unable to conceive except after that [period]?

The fundamental principle regarding divorce is permissibility if there is a need for it, but it is disliked if it is without cause. A wife is not allowed to use contraceptives without her husband's permission, as procreation is a shared right. The husband should not divorce his wife for this reason, as divorce is a grave matter with severe consequences. Some scholars are of the view that the default for divorce is prohibition, except for a permissible reason, such as the need to escape from a bad relationship. If there is no such reason, then divorce is considered foolishness and imprudence. Contraception is temporary, and pregnancy may still occur despite its use; indeed, everything is in the hands of Allah. It is advisable for spouses to show mutual respect and understanding to preserve their marital life and prevent Satan from causing discord between them, as separating spouses is among the most beloved acts to Satan.
