How many original copies of the Holy Qur’an were written during the first five centuries of Islam?

Al-Suyuti mentioned in "Al-Itqan" that Uthman ibn Affan, may Allah be pleased with him, transcribed seven copies of the Mushaf that he had compiled in consultation with the Companions. He sent one to Mecca, another to Syria, a third to Yemen, a fourth to Bahrain, a fifth to Basra, a sixth to Kufa, and kept one in Medina. The copies of the Mushaf existing today are derived from these, and no further compilation has been made after this one, and all valid readings are applicable to them.
