Poetry competitions are not permissible unless the subject matter of the poetry is permissible, such as encouraging noble morals and supporting the religion. They are forbidden if the subject matter is unlawful or disliked, such as describing love or wine, or inciting tribalism. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah indicated that competitions that involve describing young, effeminate boys (mardan) or inciting immorality are forbidden and cause enmity and hatred. Even if the subject matter of the poetry is permissible, these competitions often include Sharia-prohibited aspects such as looking at unveiled women, listening to music, tribal or nationalistic fanaticism, excessive spending of money through high-cost messages, and bearing false witness when nominating contestants based on subjective considerations. Therefore, those in charge of these programs must fear Allah and not encourage forbidden acts.
