Does praying and seeking forgiveness from afar lighten the burden on the deceased?

Supplication (Du'a), seeking forgiveness (Istighfar), and giving charity (Sadaqah) on behalf of the deceased are among the things from which they benefit and whose reward reaches them, by Allah's will. These acts become a means of alleviating their situation, whether the person supplicating or seeking forgiveness for them is a relative or not.
