What is the ruling on an individual praying alone in the row due to a gap between him and the rest of the row after the departure of the children who had filled that gap?

Your prayer and the prayer of those to your left are valid, and you do not need to repeat them. If the children left the row before the Imam's salutation, it would have been better for you to complete the row and fill its gap, as there is established encouragement for doing so.
