How is blood money (Diyya) distributed according to Islamic Sharia?

The blood money (diyya) of the deceased is distributed among his heirs according to Islamic law, with the exception of the killer who acted intentionally and aggressively; such a killer does not inherit from the blood money of his slain relative. If the deceased has no heirs, or if they are belligerent disbelievers, the blood money goes to the Muslim public treasury (Bayt al-Mal). If the treasury is not organized, the killer should donate it to the poor and needy, or spend it on public welfare projects with the intention of giving charity on behalf of the deceased.
