The answer

Satan ties three knots at the back of the head of anyone asleep, striking each knot and saying: "You have a long night, so sleep." If one wakes up and remembers Allah, one knot is untied. If one performs ablution (wudu'), two knots are untied. If one prays, all knots are untied, and one becomes energetic with a pleasant soul. Otherwise, one becomes ill-spirited and lazy. Scholars have differed regarding these knots: some say they are real, like knots of magic, while others say they are metaphorical, by which Satan discourages the Muslim from performing the night prayer (Qiyam al-Layl). As for a menstruating woman, these knots do not apply to her in the same way, because she is prohibited from prayer and ritual purity. It is sufficient for her to remember Allah upon waking up to remove laziness from her.
