An oath of immersion (Yamin al-Ghamus) is an oath in which a person deliberately swears falsely. It is called an "oath of immersion" because it plunges its taker into sin, and it is considered one of the major sins. Most scholars believe that it has no expiation, but rather requires repentance to Allah, because it is too grave to be expiated. This is the view of Ahmad and most scholars, such as Ibn Mas'ud, Malik, and others. However, Al-Shafi'i and others hold that it does require expiation. Therefore, one should seek forgiveness for the deceased and invoke mercy upon them, and combining seeking forgiveness with expiation is more cautious.
