How can one confront a husband who denies the obligation of prayer, doubts the Qur’an and the Prophet’s Sunnah, and insults the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him? Is her poor psychological state a divine punishment for previous sins? And is she religiously obligated to separate from him, despite his generosity, his love for his children, and his aversion to divorce?
Whoever denies the obligatory nature of prayer, doubts its incumbency, claims that the Qur'an has been distorted, slanders the Messenger, and calls for the separation of religion from life, has apostatized from Islam. If the man's situation is such, it is not permissible to remain with him, because the marriage of an apostate is annulled. He must be abandoned. If he repents while still in her iddah (waiting period), the marriage bond remains, because the separation due to apostasy depends on the expiration of the iddah. If a servant repents with sincere repentance, Allah accepts it and forgives his sin. The calamities that befall a believer may be a test to raise his ranks and purify his faith.
