Is there permissible singing, and how can one distinguish between it and forbidden singing? The singing that scholars have permitted is poetry free from obscenity and vulgarity, raising one's voice in chanting, melodious recitation, leading camels with songs (hidaa'), that which incites to battle, that which soothes a child in the cradle, and that which evokes yearning for Hajj. As for the disliked singing, it is that which involves distorting the letters of the alphabet, ruining the poetic meter, excessive elongation, seeking amusement and ecstasy, deviating from the customs of the Arabs, and singing that contains amorous descriptions and debauchery, which incites souls to evil, and calls to idleness and indecency.
