It is narrated in Sahih Muslim that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty showed me the eastern and western parts of the earth, and the dominion of my nation will reach all that was shown to me of it. And that he was given the two treasures, the red and the white (the treasures of Persia and Rome)." And he asked his Lord for his nation that He not destroy them with a general famine, and that He not set an enemy over them who would utterly destroy their community. And Allah answered him in that, except that their destruction would be by some of them from others.

The hadith indicates that the decree that cannot be averted is what Allah's knowledge has preceded, whereas what is averted by supplication is what is written in the Preserved Tablet, from which Allah erases what He wills and affirms. And the glad tidings of the hadith have been fulfilled, concerning the expansion of conquests eastward and westward, and that the Muslim nation will not be destroyed by its enemies, but rather by some of its members destroying others.
