Is a mother sinful for the death of her child whom she did not breastfeed, and is an expiatory fast (kaffarah) obligatory upon her, and can her children fast on her behalf given her illnesses?

If the specialized midwife has sufficient knowledge that delaying the cutting of the umbilical cord benefits the child, and that the child does not need immediate feeding, and the mother obeys her, then there is no sin upon the mother. However, if the midwife is ignorant and her action causes the death of the boy, then she is liable for what resulted from her error, in accordance with the Hadith: "Whoever practices medicine and is not known to be a physician is liable." There is no sin upon the mother if she imitates the midwife, believing her to be knowledgeable. But if she knows of her ignorance, then they both share the sin if their action caused the death of the child. Doctors should be consulted in these matters. The fasting of relatives does not suffice for the mother as long as she is alive, but it is permissible for them to fast on her behalf after her death.
