Is there any religious consequence upon me for telling my ill aunt, "By Allah, you will see my son," with the intention of reassuring her, and then she passed away before seeing him?

The majority of scholars view expiation as obligatory in this case, whereas Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah differed, holding that whoever swears an oath regarding the future, believing himself to be truthful, does not break the oath. However, it is more cautious to offer expiation, as is the position of the majority of scholars.
