Is shaking out the bedding before sleeping done three times or once?
Shaking out the bedding is one of the recommended etiquettes of sleep. This practice has been encouraged in several narrations, most of which do not specify a fixed number of times. Among them is the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "When one of you goes to his bed, let him take the edge of his lower garment and dust his bed with it, and let him mention the Name of Allah, for he does not know what he has left behind him on his bed." Another narration explicitly commands shaking the bed three times, stating: "When one of you comes to his bed, let him dust it with the edge of his garment three times." There is no contradiction between these hadiths, as both commands are broad, and doing it three times is more complete.
