Is it permissible to stop fasting a vow of Mondays for life during pregnancy?
Scholars disliked making vows (nadhr) because it could lead to hardship and the inability of the one who made the vow to fulfill it. A vow does not avert anything; rather, it is a means to extract from a miser. If fasting on a vowed Monday would harm a pregnant woman or her pregnancy, she is permitted to break her fast and make it up when the excuse is gone. Scholars differed regarding the making up of a specific vow that was broken due to an excuse: the Hanbalis and Hanafis obligated making it up, while the Malikis and Shafi'is did not, and this is what Al-Nawawi preferred. However, if it coincides with the day of Eid or the days of Tashreeq, there is no making up, and this is what the madhhabs affirmed. If a woman makes up what she missed from a specific vow due to menstruation or postpartum bleeding, the madhhab states that making it up is obligatory. Making it up is more cautious and avoids disagreement, and some scholars obligate, in addition to making it up, an expiation for breaking an oath.
