How can a man beat his disobedient wife while Allah has commanded us to be kind to animals and forbidden beating them?

The fundamental principle is that women have rights equal to men, except where specified by the Sacred Law. The degree to which men are over women is that of qawamah, which means caring for their interests, both religious and worldly. This qawamah necessitates mercy and benevolence. It permits the husband to discipline his wife when necessary, and this discipline is strictly regulated by the Sacred Law, aiming to preserve the woman's dignity and the family's stability. Permissible striking is not considered humiliation; rather, it is a remedy for dysfunction after admonition and boycotting have been exhausted. It must be a non-bruising strike that does not break a bone or disfigure a limb, and it must not be to the face, head, or dangerous areas. Furthermore, it should only be administered if it is believed that it will be effective in bringing about reform. Refraining from striking, even when permissible, is better.
