The answer

It is permissible for men and women to gather in one place if there is no fear of temptation (fitna) and if the -compliant regulations are adhered to. There is ample evidence for this: women used to pray in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, behind the men. They also went out with him in battles to provide water and treat the wounded. Similarly, mixing is permissible for legitimate needs, such as a woman going out for congregational prayers and Eid prayers, and for Hajj with a trusted company, and for conducting transactions with men in buying and selling. Imam Malik permitted a man to attend to the needs of an elderly single woman, with the recommendation of a third party being present.
