Rather, the one who made the vow has the choice between fulfilling it or expiating for it. The expiation for a vow is like the expiation for an oath.

If he chooses expiation, then according to the majority of scholars, an expiation is required for each vow. However, according to some of them, one expiation suffices. This is because the disagreement exists regarding one who swore multiple oaths and then broke them: do the expiations overlap, so that one expiation suffices, or do they not overlap, requiring an expiation for each oath? The fatwa given is that expiations overlap according to one of the two opinions among the Hanafis and Hanbalis, but they do not overlap according to the Malikis and Shafi'is. Swearing by vows is similar to swearing by Allah.
