What is the most accurate ruling regarding the covering of vessels, and did anyone say that covering them is obligatory? How are they covered nowadays? Is placing a cup in a cabinet considered covering it? And is placing a cup in front of me uncovered considered forbidden?

Covering vessels—even with a stick—is recommended by the majority of jurists, based on the prophetic command in his saying, peace and blessings be upon him: "Cover the vessels, tie up the waterskins, and close the doors." And in another narration: "If one of you finds nothing but to place a stick across his vessel and mention the name of Allah, let him do so." These are directive commands, and they become recommendable by performing them with the intention of compliance. One who neglects them does not commit a sin. Placing a cup in a cupboard or refrigerator is considered covering.
