What is the ruling on one whom Allah has afflicted with religious obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and what is the way to be rid of it?

One whom Allah has afflicted with obsessive-compulsive disorder is not held accountable for the whispers (waswas) that assail him. Allah has pardoned His nation for what they merely think to themselves, so long as they do not act upon it or speak of it.

The best cure for these whispers is to ignore them and turn away from them. The one afflicted with these whispers is on a great path of goodness as long as he strives to repel them, and his dislike and aversion to them are a sign of the sincerity of his faith.
