How can I avoid being held accountable on the Day of Judgment by those I have slandered or wronged?

This is achieved through sincere repentance that fulfills its conditions, among which is seeking forgiveness from those whom you have backbited or cursed now, before it is too late. For whoever has wronged his brother in terms of his honor or anything else, let him seek his forgiveness today before there are no dinars and no dirhams. If the person whom you backbited or cursed is aware of it, then you must seek his forgiveness by informing him and apologizing to him. But if he is unaware, then it is better to seek his forgiveness generally, without informing him that you backbited or cursed him, so as not to lead to a greater mischief. And you must ask for his forgiveness and speak well of him in the places where you previously spoke ill of him.
