What is the meaning of the noble hadith: "إذا بويع لخليفتين فاقتلوا الآخر منهما"?
The hadiths narrated by Muslim, such as: "If allegiance is pledged to two caliphs, then kill the latter of them," and "Whoever comes to you while your affair is united under one man, intending to split your staff or divide your community, then kill him," command fighting whoever rebels against the Imam or seeks to divide the Muslims. Scholars have agreed that it is not permissible to pledge allegiance to two caliphs in one era, whether the abode of Islam is expansive or not, because that leads to discord and strife. What has been said about the permissibility of this when places are far apart is a corrupt statement that contradicts what the predecessors and successors were upon.
