What is the ruling on a financially capable father who refuses to spend on his wife and children and stipulates that spending on the household must only be through him?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Expenditures on a wife and children are divided into obligatory and non-obligatory. If a father falls short in providing obligatory maintenance despite his ability, he is sinful and must repent and fulfill his obligations, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "It is sufficient sin for a man to neglect those whom he supports." Children have the right to demand maintenance, while observing patience if possible, preserving the father's right, and the wife observing her husband's right, unless obligatory maintenance is withheld.
