Is it permissible to pay off my debt to the shopkeeper with the amount I am owed from him for my working days, without taking any material compensation?
Offsetting between two amounts occurs if the shop owner acknowledges the questioner's right, provided that the amount is a confirmed debt owed by him. The consent of both parties is not required for offsetting, according to the preponderant opinion. For compulsory offsetting to occur, the majority of jurists stipulate that the two debts must be identical in kind, description, maturity, and strength and weakness, whereas this is not a condition for voluntary offsetting. If the two debts differ in kind, description, maturity, or strength and weakness, offsetting does not occur except with the mutual consent of both parties. The Malikis hold that compulsory offsetting is rare, and that most instances of offsetting are permissible.
