What is the ruling on avoiding asking about forbidden things for fear of knowing their prohibition?

A Muslim must inquire about the ruling on matters he is unaware of before engaging in them, for Allah Almighty says: "So ask the people of the message if you do not know," and for the saying of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): "Indeed, one of you will continue to be good as long as he fears Allah, and if something causes him doubt, he asks a man, and he cures him of it." Consensus has been narrated on the obligation of knowing the ruling on a matter before engaging in it.
