Is it permissible for us to dispose of a bag left with us as a trust by its owners for six years, as they have not responded to our request to take it back, and communication with them has been cut off, especially since its contents may spoil and we bear the burden of transporting and being responsible for it?

The fundamental principle regarding trusts is to preserve them and return them fully to their owners, as Allah the Almighty says: "Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due."

If it is possible to reach the owners of the bag, you should not dispose of it except with their consultation. However, if their news is cut off, and you despair of reaching them, and there is harm in keeping it, then it is permissible for you to avert this harm from yourself by giving it away in charity on their behalf.

It is preferable to hand it over to a person of knowledge or a trustworthy individual to witness its distribution, thereby absolving yourself of responsibility. The majority of scholars have held that if the owner of money cannot be identified, it should be spent on the welfare of Muslims or given in charity on behalf of its owner, and it remains guaranteed should its owner appear later.
