Will a veiled, committed girl who memorizes the Qur’an accept marriage to a young man who is regular in prayer but commits some sins and does not revise his memorization of the Qur’an, given her desire to build a Muslim home free from sins? And what is the difference between reliance on Allah (tawakkul) and choice (ikhtiyar) in the matter of marriage?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) urged the selection of a spouse with good religion and character for the continuity of companionship and the purity of affection. If a young man listens to music, shaves his beard, and watches forbidden films, then he is not of satisfactory religion and character, and one should not be content with him as a husband. However, if qualities appear in him that indicate his sincerity in desiring change, and it is highly probable that he can be positively influenced, then there is no harm in agreeing after performing Istikhara (prayer for guidance). As for a woman traveling without a mahram, it is not permissible except out of a sharia-compliant necessity.
