Do you agree to be an Imam and deliver sermons, on condition that you make supplications aloud after every prayer and place your hands at your sides during prayer, knowing that you are the only one in the country specialized in Islamic sciences?

A distinction must be made between innovations that are unanimously agreed upon as such, which should be strongly condemned, and matters about which there is disagreement. In the latter case, condemnation is less severe or may not occur at all. If your acceptance of leading the prayer will prevent an ignorant Imam from leading the people and will increase misguidance, then accept the Imamate, even if they oblige you to some transgressions, in order to minimize harm. Then, work on teaching them the Sunnah gradually, after their hearts have become reconciled with you, while seeking assistance from the sayings of scholars whom they revere. Indeed, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and Shaykh Ibn Baz stipulated the permissibility for an Imam to forgo a recommended Sunnah if doing so will reconcile the hearts of the congregants.
