Is it permissible to plant flowers on graves for decoration only, without believing that they benefit the deceased?

Planting flowers and other plants on graves for decoration deviates the grave from its intended purpose for visitation, which is admonition and remembrance of death, as it is authentically reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Visit graves, for they remind one of death."

The graveyard is a dwelling for the dead, not a dwelling for the living to be adorned and embellished. If this door were opened, graveyards would become places for boasting.

Some scholars have stipulated the invalidity of endowments for decorating graves and advised giving the cost of such decorations as charity to the poor and needy.
