It is permissible for the mother to travel if there is a benefit for her and no harm to the son. It is obligatory to obey her in what is right, but not in what harms the son, such as abandoning exams. It is preferable to communicate with her and reassure her. If it is possible to complete studies near her, that is better, especially since residing in lands of disbelief is not free from corruption.
