How can one discern the devil's step in thoughts, especially those that might come through the gateway of acts of worship?

The footsteps of Satan are his paths and ways by which he commands, and they include all sins such as disbelief (kufr), transgression (fusooq), injustice (zulm), and hypocrisy (nifaq). Scholars have stated that the footsteps of Satan mean his deeds, his sins, obedience to him, and vows made in sin. The way to avoid them is by obeying Allah and His Messenger, by shaping the Muslim's life according to Sharia, and by presenting every action, statement, or belief to the Sharia. If it conforms to it, then it is good; if it contradicts it, then it is from the footsteps of Satan that must be avoided. Furthermore, Satan may approach the believer through acts of obedience if he cannot mislead him through sins, either by extremism and excessiveness or by negligence and shortcoming.
