What is the ruling on someone who broke their fast for one day during the expiatory two-month consecutive fasting due to a medical procedure (tooth extraction) that necessitated breaking the fast, and is he required to resume fasting anew, knowing that it was possible to postpone the procedure to a time that would not affect his fasting?

The illness that permits breaking the fast is a severe one that intensifies with fasting. If the illness becomes so severe that delaying treatment until night would be difficult, then breaking the fast is permissible, and it does not interrupt the continuity [of the fast] according to Ahmad and the old opinion of Al-Shafi'i. However, if the illness is not severe, then breaking the fast is not permissible, and in that case, the continuity [of the fast] is interrupted. If there is no harm in delaying treatment until night, the continuity of his fast is interrupted, and the fact that treatment is free during the day and costs money at night is not a valid excuse for breaking the fast.
