Does one who intended to fast sixty days as expiation for killing, then broke his fast on the fiftieth day due to illness, complete the fast, or does he restart the fast from the beginning?

Scholars have agreed that menstruation and post-natal bleeding (nifas) do not interrupt the continuity of fasting for expiation (kaffara), but they differed regarding illness. Some of them held that illness does not interrupt continuity, and the fasting person builds upon what they have already observed after their recovery. This is the view of Malik and one of the two views of Al-Shafi'i, and a group of the Tabi'in also held this opinion. Abu Hanifa and his companions said: One must restart. The first opinion is closer to correctness, because the interruption due to illness is unintentional. Therefore, you do not have to start anew, but rather complete your fast.
