The answer

Scholars have reached a consensus on the permissibility for a sick person to break their fast, basing their opinion on the Almighty's saying: (But whoever among you is ill or on a journey, [then an equal] number of other days). They differed concerning the illness that permits breaking the fast. The majority held that it is an illness that worsens with fasting, or one whose recovery is feared to be delayed, or one that causes severe hardship. If the questioner's condition has reached this state, then it is permissible for him to break his fast and he must make up the missed days. If his condition has not reached this state, then he must repent, seek forgiveness, and make up the missed days without expiation.
