How is the forefinger moved in the Tashahhud?

The four Madhhabs (schools of thought) agreed on the permissibility of pointing with the index finger during the Tashahhud, but they differed on the timing of the pointing and the issue of moving it. The Hanafis believe in raising it at the negation ("la ilaha" - there is no god) and lowering it at the affirmation ("illallah" - except Allah). The Shafi'is recommend raising it at the affirmation ("illallah" - except Allah) until the end of the Tashahhud without moving it. The Hanbalis believe in pointing with it only when mentioning Allah, without moving it. As for the Malikis, they hold the view of the permissibility of pointing with it while continuously moving it right and left.
