The question

Is it permissible to continue saving money to pay for multiple oaths of expiation (kaffarat al-yamin) estimated at around 20 expiations, knowing that this will take a long time, or should one directly resort to fasting, and can the three days be fasted separately or must they be consecutive?

The answer

Oaths are divided into three types: laghw (idle oath), which requires no expiation; yamin mun‘aqidah (binding oath), which necessitates expiation upon breaking it; and yamin ghamus (perjurious oath), which is a false oath and, according to the preponderant opinion, has no expiation. No expiation is due for an oath in which the swearer says, "if Allah wills." For multiple oaths sworn regarding a single matter, only one expiation is due upon breaking them, according to the preponderant opinion. The questioner should count with certainty the oaths that necessitate expiation, then pay the expiation immediately by feeding or clothing the poor. If he cannot afford it, he may resort to fasting three days for each expiation, consecutively or non-consecutively. If he later acquires financial means, he should revert to feeding or clothing. One must beware of false oaths due to their gravity and repent for any that have been made.
