The fundamental ruling regarding drawing animate beings is prohibition, even if they are imaginary creatures with no real-life counterpart. Scholars have explicitly stated the impermissibility of depicting animate beings, even if they have no resemblance in reality. An exception to this is what serves a recognized legitimate (Shar'i) interest, such as children's toys and purposeful animated films that teach virtues and Islamic manners and are free from prohibitions. The majority of scholars have made an exception to the prohibition of depiction for what is intended for children, for the purpose of their education and amusement. However, drawing these characters without a recognized legitimate interest is not permissible, as the fundamental ruling in such cases is prohibition.
