The question

How can we emulate the Prophet, may God's prayers and peace be upon him, in all aspects of our lives so that we may realize the words of the Almighty: "There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often"?

The answer

Emulating the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and following his guidance, character, and worship, is Allah's commandment to the believers. The early Muslims (Salaf) were keen to transmit this to the Ummah in two ways: First, by narrating his noble characteristics (shama'il) and the manner in which he performed acts of worship; and second, by documenting everything that was transmitted about his guidance, conduct, character, and performance of worship. Books on shama'il (Prophet's characteristics), the Prophetic biography (), and jurisprudence (Fiqh) were compiled for this purpose. Some scholars even blended these genres into a single work, such as Ibn Al-Qayyim's "Zad Al-Ma'ad fi Hadayi Khair Al-Ibad" (Provision for the Hereafter from the Guidance of the Best of Servants). The more one's love for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, increases, the greater becomes the eagerness to follow in his footsteps. Therefore, a believer should read these books and strive to apply their teachings, while observing what is obligatory and what is recommended.
